Wheel: Water, Hygiene and Sanitation, Empowerment, Environment and Life Skills for Kilifi County Vulnerable Students and Communities

Founded in 1957 in Kenya, Amref Health Africa is the largest African health organization operating on the continent. Access to water is a Essential right, recognized by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but which in sub-Saharan Africa is denied over 387 million people. Without clean water and without basic sanitation, it is impossible to guarantee health and, consequently, development.

Since the late 1990s, Amref has been making water-sanitary projects with the aim of improving the social and health conditions of community with which he works, through their total involvement. Besides Ensure access to water sources safe and toilet, we spread the knowledge of good sanitary practices and we provide necessary skills for the Infrastructure management.

The Wheel project aims to increase the sources of clean water, through the construction of wells and other water structures in schools. All this is achieved thanks to a mapping of the water needs of schools in collaboration with the communities, the board of directors of the school (BOM), the heads of the education sector and that of public health in the area. The Wheel project is committed to ensuring access to clean water sources, improving community health and increasing their resilience to climate change.
