Born by the will of Charles III of Bourbon As part of a social and charitable assistance project, its construction began in 1751 based on the architect's project Ferdinand Escape, with the aim of creating a large "hotel" - in the classical sense of a hospice - to welcome, educate and give work to the poor, beggars and vagabonds of the Kingdom of Naples.

The initial project was great: a self-sufficient structure, with Five courtyards and a central church, capable of hosting up to 8,000 people divided by sex and age, so as to encourage professional training and social reintegration. However, for economic reasons and for the political changes of the former Eight hundred, the works were officially interrupted in 1819/1829 end the building remained unfinished: today we see about One fifth of the original project, with a long facade over 350 meters, about 430 rooms on four floors and three completed courtyards.

Over the centuries the Real Albergo dei Poveri has had multiple uses - from hospice and training school to structure for orphans, a correctional institute for minors, music school, courthouse and archives - so much so that popular nicknames such as "Recluse" or "Gamestone". Today the building is owned by the municipality and, while continuing a long process of urban restoration and regeneration, it hosts cultural events and exhibition spaces, keeping its symbolic role in the city alive.

The important seismic improvement intervention of the structure, which affected both the vertical wall structures and the vaults and arches in tuff, was carried out through the use of fabrics and strands in aramid fiber OLY TEX ARAMIDE 400 UNI AX HM of the line OLYMPUS FRP.
