Structural consolidation of the wooden beam of the Grand Hotel Boscolo Exedra in Rome
Among the most interesting applications of CFRP systems is the consolidation, completed at the end of 2007, carried out on the pitched wooden roof of the central building of the Hotel Exedra (Boscolo Hotel) in Rome. The roof, originally with four slopes, constitutes the original crowning of the so-called Clementine granary, a building built in 1705 by the will of Pope Clement XI, to complete a system of public factories intended for this purpose which, since, since 1575, as part of the reorganization of the Roman annona, with the erection of the deposit desired by Pope Gregory XIII, had gradually assigned the area of the ancient term and Diocletian to this function. The greater load of the roofing heat package needed for the hotel structure has determined the need to consolidate the wooden structure of the trusses which has been reinforced with FRP carbon fiber strands of the Olympus FRP line. The intervention was the subject of diagnostic investigations five years after the realization to verify its state of conservation and a scientific article by Professor Marina d’Aprile, Eng. Domenico Brigante and the architect Margaret Bicco.
